WRITE A BRILLIANT CV - COMMON MISTAKES

A common mistake a lot of people make is to draw up one CV and use it when applying for different positions. Every post is different with different requirements and there is no way that a generic CV can match all of these positions. It is therefore important to change your CV for each position you are applying for.

CVs need to be updated regularly and not the evening before the vacancy closes. Keep a master CV on your computer and update it monthly.

You ignore a spelling or grammar mistake and thinks no one will notice it. This a mistake that people often make - some go as far as correcting spelling mistakes with a pen on a typed CV. This is sloppy and a very bad reflection on you as well as the quality of work you might be expected to deliver as an employee. Ask a friend or family member to read your CV before printing it.

Do not use fancy fonts, borders or pictures. Your CV must look "clean" and professional.

Never, ever send a copy of your CV to a company. Or worse still: A copy of a copy of a copy. Always print an original and, together with an original cover letter, send off to the recruiter.

You do not need to write in full sentences ("I was a secretary who had numerous duties in the office") but rather use short and clear action phrases ("Secretary: Day to day office management").

If you are sending your CV by post then send it in an A4 envelope. Always double-check that the right CV goes to the right company when you are sending more than one at the same time.
